Yes, named and tied to an outcome they own They've said it in a meeting, tied it to something they're personally accountable for, and people above them know about it. Supportive but broadly framed around data maturity They're on board with getting better at data but haven't named a specific outcome they personally own. Still making the case (they haven't committed yet) I'm working on building urgency. The exec sees the problem but hasn't put their name on solving it. Not certain we have one I don't have a clear exec sponsor, or it's unclear who that person would be.

When you explain this initiative to your CFO or CEO, what do you lead with?

A specific business problem and what it costs us One sentence a CFO would understand and could attach a number to. The data strategy we're building and why it matters I frame it as a capability investment, building something important for the business long-term. The capabilities we need to improve Data quality, governance, metadata management. The infrastructure work that needs to happen. Still working out how to frame it for leadership I know the problem internally but haven't landed the right framing for a non-technical audience.

Who's driving your highest-priority use cases right now?

A named business owner who checks in without being asked They initiate conversations. They treat this as their problem, not a favor to the data team. Shared effort between my team and a business partner We collaborate but I'm usually the one driving the agenda and follow-ups. Mostly my team, with business partners aware but not driving They support it and show up when asked, but the initiative lives inside the data team. My team alone. Engaging business partners is the core challenge. Getting business stakeholders to own use cases is the core problem I'm trying to solve.

How stable is the organizational environment your initiative is running in?

Stable, with no major disruptions on the horizon No pending M&A, leadership transitions, or budget threats that would affect this initiative. Some uncertainty but nothing directly threatening There's noise in the org but the mandate for this initiative feels secure. Active leadership transition or reorg above me The org structure is changing and I'm not certain what it means for this initiative yet. Mid-M&A or under significant budget pressure The organizational environment could kill this before it shows results.

How long have you been in your current role?

6 months to 2 years. I know the org and still have the energy. I understand the political landscape and I still have the capital and motivation to move it. 2 to 4 years. I know where the bodies are buried. I have credibility and context. The window is getting shorter but I'm still effective. More than 4 years. I've seen it tried before. I know what works and what doesn't. Momentum is harder to build but I know the org deeply. Under 6 months, still learning the landscape I'm still figuring out who holds what and how decisions get made here.
